Poor waterjet cut quality: what to record

“The parts look wrong” can describe several different problems. A useful service request identifies the affected feature, the expected result, and what the machine produced. Existing parts, measurements, and job records often provide a better starting point than changing multiple settings.

Name the visible defect

Describe whether the concern is a dimensional error, an angled cut wall, an irregular edge, incomplete separation, a damaged pierce, or a result that changes between repeated parts. Include photographs of completed parts when they can be handled and photographed safely.

Mark the orientation and the affected location. If the issue appears only at corners, along one direction, at the bottom of the material, or in a certain table area, record that pattern. State whether it happens on every part or only some jobs.

Preserve the job context

The material, thickness, program, installed cutting head, and existing production settings provide context for the result. Keep the drawing requirement and actual measurements together. A surface-finish concern and a dimensional tolerance concern may need different evaluation methods.

Record what changed before the problem appeared. A new material batch, program revision, consumable replacement, maintenance event, head contact, or machine relocation may be relevant. Report the event without assuming it caused the defect.

  • Material and thickness, plus the program or job identifier
  • Required dimensions or angles and actual measurements
  • Photographs showing the defect, orientation, and scale
  • Existing pressure records, relevant settings, and exact alarms
  • The last known acceptable result and changes since that time

Understand the role of the installed head

Flow’s Dynamic Waterjet compensates for stream lag and taper. Dynamic XD adds bevel and three-dimensional cutting capability. Knowing which head is installed helps define the assessment, especially when an issue concerns wall angle or a programmed bevel.

Compensation capability does not remove the need to evaluate the rest of the system. A professional service scope may consider head condition, abrasive delivery, pressure behavior, material support, relevant geometry, height control, and the cutting setup.

Avoid changing the evidence

Do not change calibration values or several process settings at once simply to see whether a part improves. Preserve existing records and discuss the observed pattern with the person responsible for the process and the proposed service scope.

Stop if poor quality is accompanied by unexpected motion, damaged components, a suspected leak, or another unsafe condition. Follow site lockout/tagout and OEM instructions. This guide is for observations only; inspections and repairs belong with authorized personnel.

Discuss the result you need
